Keynote 1: Hard and Soft Borders in Communicating Research by Brian Trench
This keynote considers the complex communication challenges facing researchers and asks how higher education institutions prepare early-career researchers for these challenges. The speaker presents some key ideas on, and explores diverse formats for, public communication of research that also relate to communication between disciplines and between academic and other communities.
Keynote 2: Veil and Headscarf Bans as Harassment by Mathias Möschel
Over the past years, Muslim women have been rather unsuccessful in litigating headscarf or veil bans as a violation of religious freedom and/or direct/indirect discrimination on the grounds of religion both before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Companies have a vested interest in protecting their neutrality towards clients and may, therefore, ban the display of religious symbols. Given those failures, this talk addresses the question of whether sexual, religious and/or racial harassment provide a better avenue/legal characterization for addressing such claims.
